Anyone who has fitted a long run of anti-slip tape knows the frustration of a trapped air bubble. The tape goes down straight, the edges look clean, and then a pocket of air sits stubbornly under the surface refusing to be worked out. On a narrow stair nosing it is an annoyance. On a wide sheet of coarse safety grip laid across a vehicle step or a plant room floor, it is a genuine performance issue, because air under the adhesive means less contact area, and less contact area means a shorter service life. Our new aerated tooling exists to solve exactly that problem, and it now opens up the option of aerated versions across far more of our range than before.
Why trapped air matters more than it looks
A bubble is not just cosmetic. Self adhesive grip material relies on full, even contact between the adhesive layer and the substrate to build bond strength over the first 24 to 72 hours. Where air is trapped, the adhesive never touches the surface at all, so that area contributes nothing to the bond.
Worse, a bubble creates a raised, unsupported section of tape. Under foot traffic or wheeled loads, that section flexes repeatedly, and flexing works the surrounding adhesive loose. The bubble grows. Eventually you get a lifted edge, and a lifted edge on a walkway is a trip hazard on a product that was installed to prevent accidents in the first place.
Air is also a moisture trap. In wash-down areas, food production and external applications, water finds its way into any void it can reach, sits there, and undermines the bond from beneath. On the flat, well-bonded tape it would simply run off.
What aerated tooling actually does
Aerated tooling perforates the tape with a pattern of very small holes during manufacture. When the tape is applied, any air caught underneath has somewhere to go. Instead of being sealed in by a continuous, impermeable film, it escapes through the perforations as the installer presses the material down or rolls it out.
The holes are deliberately small enough that they make no meaningful difference to the grip surface underfoot, the coverage of the aluminium oxide grit, or the visual appearance of the tape from normal standing height. What they change is the fitting experience and the quality of the finished bond.
The practical benefits break down as follows:
- Fewer reworks. Less need to lift, reposition and re-press sections that have bubbled.
- Faster installation on wide sheets. The larger the piece, the harder air is to chase out to an edge. Perforation gives it a much shorter escape route.
- Better long-term adhesion. More real contact area from day one means a bond that ages better.
- Less skill dependency. Maintenance teams fitting tape occasionally get a better result without needing an installer’s technique.
Learning from skateboard grip tape
This is not new territory for us. Our skateboard grip product has been supplied aerated for years, because skateboard grip tape is applied by hand, in one piece, across a curved deck, usually by someone who is not a professional fitter. Perforation is what makes that job achievable without a deck full of bubbles.
What the new tooling does is take that same principle and make it available across our wider range of safety grip tapes. Until now, aeration was effectively a skate deck feature. It is now a manufacturing option we can apply far more broadly.
Aerated coarse safety grip and standard grades
The tooling can be applied to our mainstream lines, including Standard Safety-Grip with its 60 grit aluminium oxide surface and the coarser-grit Coarse Safety-Grip for surfaces needing extra bite. Both use the same proven PVC backing and solvent acrylic adhesive, so aeration changes the fitting characteristics without changing the grip performance you have already specified and tested.
It also extends to the more specialised grades. X-Coarse Safety-Grip with high grade adhesive is typically fitted to construction plant, agricultural machinery and access platforms, often on site, often in poor weather, and often onto steps and platforms that are neither flat nor clean. Those are precisely the conditions in which air gets trapped. Similarly, Chemical Resistant Standard Safety-Grip is used in environments where wash-down and chemical exposure make a void under the tape a real liability.
Where aerated tape earns its place
Aeration is worth asking about whenever the application involves large pieces, curved or contoured surfaces, or non-specialist fitters. Typical cases include:
- Wide sheet cut to size for vehicle steps, tailboards and cab entries.
- Machinery platforms and walkways where the tape is applied in the field rather than in a workshop.
- Slightly contoured or textured substrates such as chequer plate edges and moulded plastic treads.
- Anywhere a maintenance team, rather than a contractor, carries out replacement.
For narrow rolls fitted to straight stair nosings, standard non-aerated tape remains perfectly suitable. Air simply does not have far to travel to reach an edge. The point of the tooling is choice, not replacement.
Fitting still matters
Aeration reduces the chance of trapped air. It does not remove the need for sound preparation. The surface should still be clean, dry, free of grease and dust, and above the minimum application temperature. Peel the liner progressively rather than all at once, press from the centre outwards, and finish with a roller. Done that way, an aerated tape lies flat with very little effort.
Talk to us about aerated options
As a British safety grip tape manufacturer producing in-house, we can build aeration into a production run rather than treating it as an afterthought. That matters if you are buying converted parts, die-cut shapes or bespoke widths, because the perforation pattern can be planned alongside the cut.
If you are working with us as a Self Adhesive Grip Material Manufacturer or as a Self Adhesive Grip Material Supplier into your own customer base, the aerated option is a straightforward way to reduce installation complaints and improve the finished appearance of the work. Get in touch with the sales team with your grade, width and volume, and we will confirm what is possible on your next order.
