Friction Roller Covering – A Guide from Heskins

Safety-Grip

Friction roller covering is a unique application within modern industry, but a vital one for many companies. Read friction roller covering – A Heskins guide

Friction roller covering is a common use for the specialist range of self-adhesive embossed anti-slip tapes which Heskins produce. The grip is required for many friction roller applications including coiling machines, fabric handling rollers and covering drive rollers on conveying systems. On a conveyor belt, our customers will typically use Heskins friction tapes to provide extra purchase and grip. Nip rollers (often called squeeze points) need grip to help a product travel through them effectively.

What are Friction Roller Coverings?

Friction roller covering is a common term for the specialist range of self-adhesive embossed anti-slip tapes which Heskins produce. What is a Friction Roller Conveyor?

A method/machine that gets heavy or tricky to move objects from A to B, which can be beneficial where long distances are involved. There is a wide range of roller conveyors, all of which can benefit from a grip material covering.

Why Should you Wrap your Friction Roller?

Prevent materials from getting trapped in the friction roller, which can waste time and money. You can also extend the longevity of the friction roller as the rollers are protected. Replace the tape rather than the rollers if this is ever required, which is another great way to save.

How to Apply Friction Roller Tape? – Friction Roller Covering Application

Most customers will wrap the friction tapes around in a spiral effect, covering the web width to maximise the purchase of the fabric, carpet or other web-fed product. Normally a soft embossed anti-slip tape is used for soft fabrics such as brocade, whilst with a harsh abrasive product such as woven carpets then, something tougher is used.

What Tape can be used to Cover Friction Rolling Machines?

The most commonly used Heskins anti-slip tapes for friction roller covering are H3450 Coarse Resilient, H3418 and H3408N Black Resilient. The embossed surface on these products is a cohesive whole, reducing the risk of dirt collecting on the surface or within the embossed surface itself, as there are no hidden crevices where dirt can harbor. The surface is also non-abrasive, with a rubber-like finish that prevents damage to anything passing over or through the rollers.

Heskins offer various sizes and, perhaps less important for this application, colours, to help you get your exact requirements when choosing your solution.

How Do Rollers Reduce Friction?

The weight of the object is shared across wide rollers. The cylindrical shape of the rollers provides a directional force of motion on the object that allows the object to be “rolled” as opposed to being dragged, meaning less force is required to move the object.

What are the Advantages of Rolling Friction?

The force of sliding friction is greater than rolling friction. The greater the force to move the object, the harder the object is to move.
