A Quiet Workhorse Behind the Scenes
At Heskins, a lot of attention naturally goes into new products, new materials, and new ways of supporting our customers. However, behind every finished roll, sheet, or die-cut component is a factory full of machinery that makes it all possible. Recently, one of those unsung heroes – our long-serving rotary machine – returned to the shop floor following a full refurbishment, ready to take on the next chapter of its working life.
This particular rotary machine has been part of our production operation for more than 20 years. Over that time, it has seen extensive use, running long hours and producing hundreds of thousands of precision die-cut components. Among these are the familiar “lollipop” shapes used across a wide range of our self-adhesive safety and industrial products. It has never been a machine that demands attention; instead, it has quietly delivered consistent results day in, day out, allowing production to flow smoothly in the background.
Why Refurbishment Was the Right Choice
As with any piece of hardworking industrial equipment, time eventually takes its toll. After two decades of continuous service, the machine was still operating, but it was clear that it was no longer performing as tightly or as smoothly as it once had. Tolerances were not quite what they used to be, and while there were no major issues, we recognised that proactive action would be far better than waiting for problems to develop.
Rather than replacing a machine that had proven its reliability and value many times over, we chose to invest in a full refurbishment. The goal was straightforward: restore the machine to a condition that would support modern production demands, improve consistency, and ensure it could continue to deliver reliable performance for many years to come.
Back on the Shop Floor and Ready for the Future
The refurbishment involved removing the machine from production and carrying out a thorough mechanical overhaul. Key components were inspected, worn parts replaced, and critical areas realigned and tightened. The focus was not just on making the machine run again, but on ensuring it ran well – smoothly, accurately, and reliably. Attention was also given to overall stability, helping to reduce vibration and improve consistency during longer production runs.
Now that the rotary machine is back in place, the improvements are immediately noticeable. It runs more smoothly, feels more solid, and delivers improved accuracy across a range of die-cut formats. This brings clear operational benefits, including greater confidence during high-volume runs, reduced risk of downtime, and more consistent output.
For our customers, these improvements matter. Better machine performance supports tighter tolerances, repeatable quality, and dependable lead times. While a refurbishment like this may happen behind the scenes, it plays an important role in ensuring the products we supply continue to meet expectations.
There is also a wider message behind this investment. At Heskins, we believe in making sensible, long-term decisions. Extending the life of proven equipment is both practical and responsible, reducing unnecessary waste while protecting valuable production capability. When a machine has already demonstrated its reliability over many years, giving it a second lease of life is often the smartest option.
Today, our rotary machine is back on the shop floor, refreshed, refined, and ready for action once again. It may not be brand new, but it is well prepared for many more years of hard work – quietly supporting our manufacturing operation, just as it always has.
