All you needed to know about die cutting anti slip tape!
People often wonder what we mean about ‘die cutting’. Customers question what it is, why tooling is often required, what Heskins can achieve and what is feasible. I hope this helps to provide insights.
Die cutting is the method for converting our anti slip materials into a shape. We produce our products in rolls upto 1.5m wide with lengths upto 100m. To create a shape we need to die cut them. There are three main methods;
We possess multiple large scale, flat bed presses. We purchase the latest CNC controlled machines with the widest possible bed size (typically around 1600mmx900mm but creating larger die cuts is possible by splitting the tool into component sizes), we buy machines with inbuilt auto pressing capabilities using automated SICK capabilities. We modify the machine to have auto web fed capabilities removing a normal sheeting procedure thus allowing for much faster production and lower costs by removing labour. We prefer rule tooling. Tooling is a method of creating the shape; a tool will normally last the time of the requirement. Each produced part is a clone of the tool and thus we can guarantee total consistency and quality. Accuracy is down to an impressive 0.1mm.
Rotary cutting is the fastest cutting procedures. A rotary press is basically an advanced mangle, dragging material through at a high speed, the material then meets a shaft that presses very tightly onto a rotary cutting tool, and the material is pressed. The end result is either sheeted, kiss cut (this is a way of cutting through the product but not the backing liner), skeleton removed (the skeleton is the waste material around the product that is often not required) etc. We do not use abrasives on our rotary cutting machines (the tough minerals create an abrasive dust that over a short time will destroy bearings and valves), but, we can offer kiss cutting on abrasive materials on request by changing depth settings. Rotary cutting tools are much more expensive than rule tooling. Accuracy is less than 0.1mm.
Laser cutting and water jet cutting
This is not something that we recommend for various reasons. The laser can burn backing paper, it often generates fumes whilst water jet cutting, the backing paper can become saturated and the back-blast often drags tiny debris particles back onto the surface creating dirty margins.
